A recent decision in Portland, Ore., has sparked a lot of attention. Kyung Lee, a 49-year-old mother of three from Beaverton, Ore., has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, a fatal cancer. The jury found Johnson & Johnson guilty and ordered the company to pay Ms. Lee a total of $260 million.
This case has brought to light the dangers of asbestos exposure, as Ms. Lee had used Johnson & Johnson's cosmetic products and was diagnosed with mesothelioma in August 2023. The jury held Johnson & Johnson responsible for Ms. Lee's illness due to negligence and the presence of asbestos in their talc-based products. They awarded $60 million in compensatory damages and $200 million in punitive damages.
Ms. Lee and her attorneys, along with others, have stated that this case is a reminder that companies should be held accountable for their actions. This case, known as Kyung H. Lee et al. v. Bi-Mart Corporation et al., No. 23-CV-40369, has certainly raised awareness about the potential risks associated with certain cosmetic products.
