Milbank Elects Nine Lawyers to Partnership

New partners span multiple practices, including litigation and arbitration, banking and leveraged finance, environmental law, project finance, tax, and technology and outsourcing; lawyers resident in six offices worldwide

New York, January 12, 2015 - Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP is pleased to announce its election of nine new members to the firm’s partnership, effective January 1. The new partners represent a broad range of practice areas, including litigation and arbitration, banking and leveraged finance, environmental law, project finance, tax, and communications, technology and outsourcing. They are based in Frankfurt, London, Los Angeles, Munich, New York, and Washington, DC.

“We are delighted to welcome these nine exceptionally skilled colleagues to the firm’s partner ranks,” said Milbank Chairman Scott Edelman. “The size of the new class reflects continued confidence in our business, while the breadth of practices and offices they represent highlights Milbank’s strengths in key markets around the world.”

The new Milbank partners are:

Matthew Ahrens, a member of the Corporate Group, based in New York. Mr. Ahrens advises clients on a broad range of environmental matters, with an emphasis on identifying and resolving environmental issues and liability in financing, project development, mergers, acquisitions, real estate development, securities offerings and corporate restructurings. His experience spans many industries, particularly throughout the energy sector. Mr. Ahrens is consistently recognized by Chambers as a notable practitioner for his environmental transactional work, and has been described as a “growing force in the environmental market.” He earned his J.D. from Vanderbilt University and his A.B. from Dartmouth College.

Laetitia Costa, a member of the Leveraged Finance Group, based in London. Ms. Costa focuses on cross-border and French banking transactions, including leveraged finance transactions, syndicated lending and structured finance as well as restructurings and real estate transactions. She advises lenders, financial sponsors and corporate entities. The co-author of a chapter in the Practitioner's Guide to European Leveraged Finance (2009, Sweet & Maxwell Ltd), Ms. Costa attended University of Aix-Marseille III, where she earned her Magistere in Business Law, Tax and Accounting and D.E.S.S. and D.J.C.E International Business Law degrees, and University of Pantheon Assas (Paris II), where she earned a D.E.A. in Public Finance and Tax Law.

Mathias Eisen, a member of the firm's Banking and Leveraged Finance Group in Frankfurt. Dr. Eisen mainly represents financial institutions, investors, sponsors and corporate clients on syndicated lending, acquisition finance and debt capital markets transactions. He previously worked at a major law firm in Frankfurt, from where he was also seconded to an investment bank in London. After completing a traineeship as a qualified banker (Bankkaufmann), he studied law at the University of Passau and received his doctorate degree from the University of Frankfurt.

Joel Harrison, a member of the firm’s Communications, Technology & Outsourcing Group, based in the London office. Mr. Harrison’s practice focuses on global IT and outsourcing transactions and technology-related matters, including data privacy, information security and financial services regulation. He also represents clients in major disputes and renegotiations in the technology sector. Recognized as a leader in IT and outsourcing by Chambers and other key guides, he holds a law degree from Cambridge University.

Jerome McCluskey, a member of the Leveraged Finance Group in New York. Mr. McCluskey focuses on representing banks and other financial institutions in senior lending transactions. He has extensive experience advising clients in connection with domestic and cross-border financing transactions, including leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations, bridge and mezzanine financings, and DIP and exit facility financings. He earned his J.D. from Stanford University and his A.B. magna cum laude from Harvard College.

Tawfiq Rangwala, a member of the Litigation & Arbitration Group. Mr. Rangwala is based in New York and recently spent two years resident in Milbank’s London office. His practice concentrates on US and international regulatory and criminal enforcement matters, as well as internal investigations across multiple jurisdictions and industries. He has represented institutions and individuals in many of the highest-profile regulatory matters over the past decade, including those relating to LIBOR and alleged manipulation in the FX markets. He also helps financial services firms and corporate clients comply with evolving regulatory obligations, in the US and internationally. In addition, Mr. Rangwala has extensive experience handling a wide range of complex commercial litigation in federal and state courts. He earned his J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School, where he served as managing editor of the Osgoode Hall Law Journal, and his B.A. from McGill University.

Aaron Renenger, a member of the firm’s Litigation & Arbitration Group in Washington, DC. Mr. Renenger has a complex commercial litigation practice, primarily representing financial institutions, including investment banks, broker-dealers, hedge funds and private equity firms. His experience spans federal and state court litigation involving bankruptcy, fraudulent transfer, contract and securities matters. He also represents institutions and individuals in regulatory investigations regarding compliance with federal securities laws and the rules governing self-regulatory organizations. He earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of California, Hastings College of Law and his B.A. from California State University, Sacramento.

Matthias Schell, a member of the Tax Group in Munich. Dr. Schell’s practice comprises all aspects of German and international tax law, including tax aspects of cross-border transactions and corporate reorganizations. He also advises on tax court and tax-related arbitration proceedings. The author of numerous publications on tax law and a regular panelist at tax conferences, Dr. Schell attended the University of Augsburg, where he earned a doctorate and a Magister Legum in International Commercial Law. Dr. Schell is also a tax advisor and a certified tax lawyer.

Timothy Wendling, a member of the Project Finance Group, based in Los Angeles. Mr. Wendling previously practiced in Milbank’s Litigation Group. He has experience in a broad range of finance, acquisition and restructuring transactions, including wind, solar and geothermal electricity generation projects, municipal waste projects, and large-scale infrastructure projects. Mr. Wendling has represented lenders, developers and sponsors in the development, acquisition and financing of a number of renewable energy projects, including wind power projects across the US and solar power projects in the US, Canada and Europe. Before joining Milbank, he was a tax consultant with Deloitte & Touche. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame Law School, where he participated on the Journal of Legislation; he earned his B.A. from the University of Southern California.
