The Minnesota Timberwolves started in 1989 in the NBA Western Conference Midwest Division before moving to the Northwest Division in 2003. The Wolves were one of four expansion teams along with Orlando Magic, Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat. Since 1990 the team has played at the Target Arena which has a capacity of 19,356. The teamβs name came from a name-the-team contest with the second most popular suggestion being the Polars. The stateβs city councils made the final choice with emphasis on a unique name showcasing features of the state, and free-roaming packs of timberwolves are found in Minnesota. The team colors are midnight blue, aurora green, lake blue, moonlight grey and frost white.
During its relatively short time in the National Basketball League the Timberwolves have not achieved a great deal of success. In their first seven seasons they did not get to the postseason always finishing fifth or sixth in their division. In the 1995 NBA Draft they selected Kevin Garnett and the following year added Stephon Marbury. These two players changed the fortunes of the team as they became much more competitive.
In 1996-97 season the Wolves made the Playoffs for the first time in their history but went out in the First Round to the Houston Rockets. The team also qualified for the postseason for the next six seasons with unfortunately the same result, a First Round exit. Finally in the 2003-4 season they had a major breakthrough. After signing Fred Hoiberg and Michael Olowokandi they topped their division for the first time and seemed like the team to beat. This time they got past the First Round, beating the Nuggets 4-1. In the first Conference Semifinals they made it past the Sacramento Kings on their way to the Conference Finals. Their dream season finished there, though, as the Lakers beat them over six games.
